#17: I want to advance my career, but there is a lot of competition …

It’s a common notion that internal competition creates a better, higher value than consensus. “Competition means that people exert themselves, do that little extra.” In which case the company’s values are based on competence, personal prestige and competition. This often leads to power plays within the company.

In their research, Jim Collins and Richard Barrett have seen that companies with such an outlook are not successful in the long term. They can be economically successful for a short period but after a while when prestige, competition and power plays hold back the company, the success comes to an end.

Instead Jim and Richard have seen—from different directions, in many companies and in many businesses—that a corporate culture with values aimed at consensus creates success. It’s a question  of working toward cooperation to create strategic alliances, for a sustainable society and future generations. All stakeholders stand to gain, on many different levels, including the financial, even though money is no longer the most important priority.
